Geocaching - Gobbler's Knob

While we were in Kentucky we grabbed a few more caches.  One of the ones I enjoyed was the last of a series that highlighted Kentucky Dam Village.  We had grabbed the other ones back in April and I posted about them here.  This particular cache was called "KDV-Gobbler's Knob."

We had put this last one off for a day when we had a little more time.  We drove to the dam and parked at Pinnacle cemetery, which is a really old cemetery back in the woods.  I like these old cemeteries because a lot of them have Civil War soldiers buried in them.

It was almost a mile hike to the cache, but it took us down a nice, wide trail through the woods.  There's been very little rain at the lake this year and all the dirt underfoot is hard packed.  We kicked up pufts of thick dust as we hiked along.

Somebody obviously tried to drive down the road last spring after the rains.  It looks like they had a tough time of it....

Chablis stayed on higher ground while I climbed down and searched for the cache.  I also realized that we could have taken the pontoon boat there if we had wanted to do that.

Once I signed the log book, Chablis and I decided to walk out onto the breakwater wall and take some pictures...

The views of the dam and the lake were really pretty.  It was a crystal clear day and a lot of people were out enjoying the lake.  There was a steady stream of boat traffic in and out of the marina.

Once out at the end of the wall, we had to take some pictures of ourselves standing underneath the signs.  After all, how many times will we possibly be out there??

We enjoyed doing this cache because it was a nice size cache container and it was an enjoyable hike to get to it.  Plus it took us to a spot on the lake that we had never been to before - the breakwater wall.

Geocaching Kentucky Lake Easter Weekend 2012

Easter weekend found us searching for a few geocaches around the lake.  On Friday we found 6 of them.

This was the first one we did.  I totally expected the cache to be hidden in the toilet, but it wasn't.....

How's this one for a large cache?  This one was hidden down a trail by one of the marinas.

The beach by the dam was empty that day.  And cold and breezy.  But we still managed to find the cache, which was hanging over a ledge.

We went for a walk to check out a nearby bridge.  Along the way, I found a brand new lure that some poor fisherman lost.  I bet he was mad too!

They finally opened the old road across the top of the dam.  It's been re-done and it's beautiful, with driving and bicycle lanes.  There are 2 different locations where you can pull over, get out and enjoy the view.  And guess what?  There's a new geocache hidden there, which we found, of course!

Another cache was hidden in the woods near a small airport.  I'd never been to this airport, so it was nice to drive down and at least see where it was.  It's for small private planes, it's not a commercial airport.

The last cache that we found was a park and grab, so I didn't bother taking a picture.  We attempted another cache at a park and had to DNF it.  We'll probably go back another time and try for it again.

I'm on Lake Time

Lake Time means bathing suits.  The lake house is extremely informal and most of us wear bathing suits from dawn til dusk.  I'm happiest when dripping bathing suits and damp towels are hanging from anything.  That means that everyone is having a good time!

Ahhhhhh........  Lake Time!

Kentucky Dam Tour

Yesterday we took a drive to the dam.  We have been going to KY. Lake for 20 years and while we have driven over the dam many times, we've never actually stopped to look at it.  So yesterday we drove down the access road and got up front and personal with the dam.

Here's what it looked like a couple of weeks ago when we had the record breaking flooding event....

And here is what it looks like now at normal summer pool levels....

In this next picture you can see the construction equipment in the background that was all flooded out in the first picture above....Yes, the water was actually that high!

Kentucky Dam is the longest of 9 dams built on the Tennessee River...

Here's a shot of  the river below the dam.

There were a lot of people fishing from the rocks along the shore as well as from boats.  One guy was catching some nice fish, which looked like catfish.
If you look at the front of the building you can see a little overlook observation deck.  We walked over to check it out.

From inside the building we could see the control room of the dam.

The Ky. Dam reservoir is the largest manmade lake in the eastern United States.

When we walked back outside I had to check out this object.  At first I thought it was a propeller from a ship, but soon discovered that it's actually a turbine for the dam.

'
It was interesting to walk around and see the dam close up and find out a little about how it operates.

When we left, we pulled over to look at all the vultures hanging out on this tower.

And in case you were wondering, we did go fishing for awhile and here's some of what we caught!

Any day that involves a little bluegill fishing is a good day!
