Camp Beauregard, KY.

Visiting Civil War sites is one of my favorite things to do.  Yesterday we stopped at Camp Beauregard in western Kentucky to find a geocache.

Camp Beauregard was a military installation where over 5000 Confederate soldiers were trained.   Unfortunately, the camp was disease ridden and over 1000 soldiers died at the camp.  Because of this, the camp was burned down and abandoned.  Union Forces captured the site shortly after that.

We drove over to the camp turned cemetery, armed with plenty of our own re-enforcements, in search of a little history lesson and a geocache.   The camp was situated on top of a small hill, with a beautiful view of the valley below.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy placed a memorial at the location in 1909.  Unfortunately the inscription can barely be read anymore.

We all enjoyed wandering around and reading the old headstones....

Alyssa was excited to find a small coin in the cache container.  It's always fun for the kids to find some "swag."

Rumor has it that the camp/cemetery is now haunted, but we didn't encounter any ghostly beings while we were there.

We capped off our day with an evening campfire, where we roasted hot dogs for dinner and s'mores for dessert.  It was a beautiful evening, warm with clear skies.  I love autumn!

  4. Looks like you all had a great time. Old cemetaries are very interesting. We toured a pioneer cemetary in 4th grade...I still remember it!

  5. Oh man, now you are making me real jealous! If you come out our way (NEPA) a must trip, only a short drive from here, is Gettysburg, PA. We visit nearly every year and always find something new and cool there. The civil war is an interest of mine and I love to explore and cache in that area. This place looks real cool too, thanks for sharing.

  6. I love visting civil war sites too. It's neat to stand there and imagine what was happening in that very spot. Weird? I know, I know, everyone always tells me I'm weird so I'm used to it ;)

I did my family tree a couple years ago and visited ALOT of cemeteries. The older gravestones were the best and so full of information. Today all you get is a name and dates on your stone :(

LB: Not weird at all - I do the exact same thing! LOL.
