Just Close Your Eyes and Listen

When you walk out the door, do you ever really hear the noises around you?

The sounds of the city are totally different from the sounds in the country.  I grew up in Chicago, where there is constant noise.  The block we lived on was half a block down from 2 major streets, so we always heard cars braking and horns blasting.  On the other side of one of the streets was the rail road line.  At night I could hear the gentle click-clack of the train rolling down the track and the lonesome wail of its horn.  On the other side of the railroad tracks was the expressway.  There were always cars and trucks traveling on it.  On top of all that, the airport was only miles away, so we could hear the planes taking off and landing.

Now, when we're at home, our ears are constantly assaulted by loud noises.  We live right in the middle of the city, a block away from a fire station and just a few blocks from a hospital, the expressway, and 2 different sets of railroad tracks.  We're very near the airport and planes are always lined up overhead, either taking off or waiting to land.  So when we're sitting in our front room at home, we hear a steady orchestra of fire and police sirens blaring, car horns beeping, brakes screeching, ambulances whining, airplanes roaring overhead, kids shouting in the church lot across the street, and lawn mowers humming.

But when we're at the lake, the noise is totally different.  We're out in the country, 10 miles away from town.  At night, the silence is hard to get used to.  It's so quiet.  But during the day, the sounds at the lake are actually pleasing to me.  Yesterday I was sitting on the deck, enjoying the afternoon sun, and I leaned back and closed my eyes.  For 5 minutes I laid there and just let the sounds of the country ring in my ears.  Here's what I heard in my 5 minutes of listening...

  • 3 different types of boat motors racing across the lake.  The noise that the huge cigarette boats make is totally different from the sound that a bass boat or a pontoon boat makes.  Even the way their hulls slam against the water sounds different.
  • geese honking
  • ducks quacking
  • carpenters shouting to each other over the constant banging of hammers and the buzz of table saws
  • a lawn mower
  • a leaf blower
  • a dog barking
  • 4 distinctly different bird calls
  • a car driving down our street
  • the wind rustling through the leaves overhead
  • kids shouting
  • a motor cycle on the street across the bay
So here's the weird thing.  During the day, I prefer the sounds of the country.  They are less harsh and much more relaxing.  But at night, I need the noise of the city in order to sleep.  I love to lay in bed with my window open and I actually like to hear the truckers shifting gears on the interstate and I strain to hear the rumble of a train going down the tracks.  If I'm lucky and the conductor pulls the horn, I'm asleep in seconds.....

Try it the next time you're out in your yard.  What sounds do you hear??

Just Call Me Mother Goose

Chablis & I were kayak fishing for blue gill the other day.  We were doing pretty good too.  Fishing out of the kayak is a lot harder than fishing off the dock.   In the first place, the wind was blowing us one way and the current was shooting us the other.  But we were very determined to get over to where some brush piles were because we knew that was where the fish were.

We caught some bluegill.....

A couple of perch.....

Some redear.....

But the most adorable thing was this cute little baby duck    goose.  He spied me and came swimming over, full steam ahead.....

I mean, come on, how cute is he???  He kept swimming around our kayaks and would not leave....

Finally I decided to drift over to shore and see what the little guy wanted to do.

I was absolutely dying to hold him but I was afraid of putting my scent on him, so I put the paddle out, he climbed up and didn't seem the least bit scared of me.

He even tried to climb into the kayak with me, but I wouldn't let him.  He seemed perfectly content to go for a kayak ride too...

A couple of geese flew overhead and landed on shore close by.  They started honking and the baby started baby honking back, so we decided to take the little guy over towards them and see if he went by them.  Just as we did, Louie and Jr. pulled up in the bass boat and got to watch the show!

I scooped the baby up and placed him back in the water and I started to paddle towards the geese.  The closer I got, the more they honked.  The little baby swam right behind me.  It was so cute the way he was trying to keep up.  I was actually afraid of getting too close to the geese, because I didn't want them to attack me, so I swerved off to the right and the baby swerved to the left and swam right over to them.  Whew.   Big sigh of relief!

Watch this video - it's really cute!

My Ducks are Back!

Every spring I have a pair of ducks that comes to visit.  They love my swimming pool.  The two of them come and hang out for 2-3 weeks, swimming around like they own the place.  They are so cute.  Then they take off and I won't see them again until the following spring.  Isn't that the funniest thing?  I always look forward to seeing them.....

This afternoon Chablis and I were out on the back deck enjoying the still, unseasonably warm temperatures.  It was in the high 70's today.  Ok, I admit it, we had our bathing suits on again.  I was also sporting my Sanibel Island Shellabration Hat that my friend Traci sent me from the Shell Fair last week and day dreaming about Sanibel.

Spring has really arrived early this year.  My lilac bushes are already beginning to bud....

And my perennials are coming up...

I spent some time raking off flower beds and then headed inside where I spent over 2 hours cleaning my bedroom.  I think I must have sun stroke, because who spends 2 hours cleaning one room?  I washed down and dusted everything.  I mean the good dusting too - the kind where I actually pick stuff up and move it (mother).  Like dust the entire surface of the dresser, dust the item I moved and then put everything back.  My usual dusting method involves a dust rag sprayed with lemon pledge and I sort of flick my rag around everything.  I am a very good surface cleaner.   My mom has been known to, on occasion, write Dust Me across surfaces in my house.  I moved all the cd's and dvd's off the shelves and cleaned the shelves.  I went through all my books.  I unhooked the broken dvd player and hooked up a new one.  I unscrewed the light fixtures and washed them along with all my Precious Moments statues.   I even vacumned the entire room.

When I told my husband I was cleaning our bedroom, I'm sure he was picturing this....

When in reality, I was thinking "I hate this" and I really look like this....

Except that I was still in my bathing suit but I'll spare everyone the image of that!  Believe me, you will thank me!

One thing I did enjoy doing though was setting up the little cascading waterfall my daughter bought me.  I filled it with water, pretty stones and some shells from Sanibel Island.

It sounds really nice and relaxing.  Isn't it cute?  I can't wait to go to bed tonight and listen to it.  Although I'm sure my husband will still be picturing this.....
