Vintage Trunk Re-do

Two weeks ago I found another vintage trunk at an estate sale so of course I snatched it up.  If you missed that post, you can read it here.

This is what I started with.  It was in pretty decent condition....

It was clean and didn't smell - always a bonus!

And it had its original tray...

It also had a working lock and key....

The worst thing was the deteriorated leather handles.  They were toast!

The first thing we Louie did, was to remove the damaged leather handles.  We cut up an old belt and used that to make new handles.  It worked out perfectly....

Then I painted the chest with white and gray....

I grabbed my vintage map book and tore out maps of the United States as well as State Fact Sheets and pasted them to the inside of both the trunk and tray using Mod Podge.  Tony snapped a couple pictures of me while I was working.  Does anyone else work on projects in the middle of their living room???

He said I looked like a little bird in a nest so I was peeping....  LOL!

Then I coated everything with 2 coats of polyurethane for a strong, durable finish...

Afterwards I applied a layer of wax to the outside and I was done!

I'm listing this baby for sale.  It will be perfect for storage or to use as a small table in a front room.  Now we're starting work on the trunk we picked up last week.  I think I am trunk drunk!

    1. Thank you so much. I like to work on stuff in the living room at night so I can watch tv with my husband while I work.

    2. Very clever - do you ever take a day off?

    3. Rarely. I always have too much I want to do. Besides, I can't just sit and do nothing. I get antsy. Plus I work 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. :-)

  5. Oh My Gosh Kim, that trunk is gorgeous!!! You did such an amazing job, and I just love how you painted it and that you added the maps and fact sheets to the inside. It is a one of a kind piece now and so pretty! I think it would make a great coffee table, but would be great in a room to be used for storage too. It's a very versatile piece and I am sure it will sell!
I love that you used an old belt for the handles too!
    Beautiful!!

    1. Thanks Kimberley. I was so happy with how it tureds out. I hope it sells. Now, the new truck we just got is going to need a lot of work, but I had a brainstorm today on what I'm going to do on the inside. I can't wait to start, but louie has to replace the handles first.

  14. Wow that is one beautiful trunk. The inside is a work of art. And yes I also have a trunk in my living room that I am decoupaging right now, So you see we bloggers have our own set of rules when it comes to home decor. A ton of paint bottles in the dining room too.

    1. I don't know which I like doing more, painting the outside or mapping the inside. I don't have paint bottles in the dining room but only because I don't have a dining room. LOL!!! Thanks for coming by and leaving a comment.
