Brass Balls

Ok, now that I have your attention....

Last year we did a geocache in Wisconsin named Brass Ball Corner.  GCYQ6T  This was an interesting cache to do because of the history behind the Brass Ball you see here...

Way back in the 1800's intersections, not roads, were given names.  The trail going through Brass Ball Corner extended for many miles and an enterprising farmer built an inn at this intersection.  He hung a gilded ball at the intersection, leading to the well known name of Brass Ball Corners.

Today a replica of the brass ball hangs over this busy intersection.  This is what the intersection looks like today...

I think it's interesting to imagine what the intersection looked like almost 170 years ago.

We went with my mom and dad to find the geocache and they are busy signing the log here...
Last week when we were up in Wisconsin, we drove through this intersection and I recited the history to my kids.  They thought it was cool to see and it's just another example of something I would never have heard about if it wasn't for geocaching.

I wonder what that smart farmer would have thought if he knew that 170 years later we were geocaching at the site of his inn?  In his wildest dreams he could never have imagined what this intersection looks like now!

  1. Technology has escalated beyond my wildest dreams the last 30 years. I wonder what the intersection will look like in another 170 years? People will probably be flying around and over the brass ball in their 'cars'!
