It's Friday, so that means it's Flashback Friday with my friend Martha over at Seaside Simplicity.
This weeks flashback photo is of me playing the "Hanging Marshmallow" game at my birthday party.
My mom organized the best birthday parties for us when we were kids. My birthday is in August, so we usually got to play the party games outside. Lots of fun games like the hanging marshmallows, walk across the yard with cotton balls on your wooden spoon, drop the wooden clothespins into the glass milk jug, pin the tail on the donkey, pop a confetti filled balloon over your head and the ever popular duck, duck, goose. Fun times!
I don't know if you can tell, but we're all wearing little party hats, the girls always wore nice dresses and the boys wore dress shorts and shirts. I can see part of my mom on the right side, and she's definitely wearing a nice dress as well. Childhood birthday parties were always a huge neighborhood event and much looked forward to.
Hop over to Seaside Simplicity and join in on the fun!
I've never played the hanging marshmallow game, and if fact this is the first time I've heard about it. Looks like great fun! I love the old black and white photos!
ReplyDeleteThe marshmallow game may have been a Chicago thing. I like the black and white photos too!
DeleteThis is great! You are so cute! I remember the marshmallow game from my birthday parties too. The good old days :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for playing along on Flashback Friday - have a great weekend!
I really enjoy the flashback Fridays - so much fun to see everyone's pictures and hear the stories.
DeleteLook how cute you are at your party. And it really was fun to send out invitations and put on a party dress. All of the special touches to make it fun for all. We didn't always have boys at ours when we were little! heehee! But I remember a lot of the games you mentioned....except the marshmallow! Very sweet memories!
ReplyDeleteI grew up on a block with a lot of kids so we always had boys at our parties. Would you believe that I still keep in touch with a lot of them?
DeleteI wonder how many people these days know what wooden clothes pins and glass milk bottles are? LOL.
I love Flashback Friday!
ReplyDeleteCotton balls on a wooden spoon? Whatever happened to eggs? That's the game I remember! Particularly at Easter! :p
ReplyDeleteThat marshmallow thingy looks fun! New one for me!
And you look adorable! :o)
Cotton balls are really hard to keep on a spoon and way less messy for a bunch of 8 year olds. LOL! :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds like your mom was a great party provider! Fun picture.
ReplyDeleteShe was a great party planner! Thank you so much for coming by and leaving a note. :-)
DeleteWhat a great memory. I've never heard of hanging marshmallow, but it looks fun!
ReplyDeleteMaybe that's why I love S'mores so much now. Thanks for coming by!
DeleteHow cute! Never heard of this game, but I'm sure it is equivalent to bobbing with apples. I was looking through some old pictures to scan and I did notice that we tended to dress up more "back then" then I dress up now.
ReplyDeletebetty
Seeing how everyone dressed up all the time back then is very interesting to me. Even to cook dinner my mom always wore a dress.
ReplyDeleteI was one of the few parents that did my kids (now aged 30 & 26) birthdays at home. We too played simple games and they had tons of fun instead of heading off to a "fun center" or expensive movies etc.
ReplyDeleteThe favorite game was always a relay race with piles of my husband's clothes at either end. They would run down, put on a shirt, pants and big boots and then run back, take it off and their teammate would put it all back on and run it back. Long after the prizes were all given out they would play it again and again on their own.
That sounds like a fun game!
DeleteWhat fun memories! Looks like a Leave It To Beaver" episode with Mom in a dress! If you're "of a certain age" you'll remember that show. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I DO remember Leave it to Beaver. LOL!
