A Buck in the Woods

The other night we went out and did a couple of caches after dinner.  We were walking down a bike trail through the woods when we walked up on 2 really nice buck.  One was an 8 point and the other was a 10 point.  I got a nice shot of the 8 pointer, and you can just make out the 10 pointer behind the tree.

That's always nice to see, but when you see it in the woods just outside of Chicago, well, that is pretty cool because it's so unusual.  They stood there for a few minutes watching us and then turned and disappeared like ghosts into the trees.  How can you not love seeing that?

  1. Not just a beautiful animal but, an excellent example of the success in the Illinois parks and forestry programs. Unhealthy deer don't grow like this guy! These folks are passionate to keep as much natural resources as possible despite the high value of land in this area. Without them someone would be making a fortune however sites like this just would not happen. I applaud them and you Kim for this wonderful picture. Thanks! I love Chicago!

  2. OH WAIT, click on the picture, there is a bigger one behind the tree, how cool is that? I didn't see it at first. Maybe it's me...good night

  3. That is so cool! I haven't seen a big buck since we left Idaho. The deer in Florida are so small.
Here in the east all points are counted, out west only one side of the rack is counted. I would call those a 4 point, and a 5 point instead of an 8 and 10. Still an impressive size, though.

  4. Della: I've never heard that about the western way of counting just one side. Gee, you learn something new everyday. Thanks for that cool bit of info!

  5. Kim..that counting is interesting...never heard of that either. In MN it would have been 8 & 10 and I'm pretty sure WA did the same. Maybe it is just in the area of ID she is from?? Either way I would love to have had a shot (totally offending your first poster) and put that in my freezer. Meat in Alaska is outrageous.

  6. Now that was a fabulous outing!

I remember the thrill of seeing deer during hiking trips in the Rockies as a kid... loved it then and I'd love it now! But you don't get to see much wildlife here in Spain.

  7. Gayle: I have very torn emotions about deer. We love to see them in the woods and get very excited when we see such nice ones, especially up around Chicago where such a sighting is rare. However, we do deer hunt in KY. We only shoot what we will eat and we enjoy the deer meat, especially when we have it made into summer sausage or jerky.
