Silo Overlook

The other day we did a geocache at a cool location at LBL in Kentucky.  It was called Silo Overlook.  I really like caches that take you to an interesting location, and even though we've been going to Kentucky Lake for years, we've never gone to see the Silo Overlook.

Wonderful old, but locked, grate door....

At one time there were 3 pavilion's at the top of the silo that afforded you a fantastic view of Lake Barkley.

It was a sunny clear day, but with a cold, brisk wind that roared in from the lake.

The old wooden walkway to the top of the overlook has fallen apart and is now partially dismantled.  No way to get to the top anymore, which was a shame, because I would have loved to go up there.

Before we left, we took the opportunity to do a little phooning.

Even though we couldn't climb to the top of the silo anymore, we did find the geocache that was hidden there.  This was a great location and a fun place to visit.  Plus it felt good to be out walking in the woods again.

  2. I'm glad you didn't TRY to get to the top of that thing! I know you thought about it...you love to climb! It's fun to get out in the woods. We hiked yesterday and had the best time! It was 80 degrees though! Have a good day my friend! Hugs!

  4. Fun to discover tumble-down old buildings. A pity they didn't keep this one maintained for the public.

    1. It's in really bad shape - I'm surprised they haven't torn all that wood down.

  9. Interesting location. Were they originally actual silos? and if so, why the platforms on top?

    1. At one time it was an actual silo and it was converted into an attraction at Kentucky Lake. They built the ramp and observation towers for a scenic view. It was closed sometime in the 90's and the lower part of the ramp was disabled to keep people off of it.

  10. Where is Snug harbor. I own a moving company and moved a man that did model railroading about 2 weeks ago. All of his model stations etc. had Snug Harbor on them. I didn't think anything of until I saw this. Btw that was an amazing place for small kids in its glory. my last visit to the top was fall 1990. Ashame they let it go. GC name HereFishyFishy. I don't cache much any more except for when I travel. Co founder of River Valley Geocachers.
