Camp Beauregard, KY.

Visiting Civil War sites is one of my favorite things to do.  Yesterday we stopped at Camp Beauregard in western Kentucky to find a geocache.

Camp Beauregard was a military installation where over 5000 Confederate soldiers were trained.   Unfortunately, the camp was disease ridden and over 1000 soldiers died at the camp.  Because of this, the camp was burned down and abandoned.  Union Forces captured the site shortly after that.

We drove over to the camp turned cemetery, armed with plenty of our own re-enforcements, in search of a little history lesson and a geocache.   The camp was situated on top of a small hill, with a beautiful view of the valley below.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy placed a memorial at the location in 1909.  Unfortunately the inscription can barely be read anymore.

We all enjoyed wandering around and reading the old headstones....

Alyssa was excited to find a small coin in the cache container.  It's always fun for the kids to find some "swag."

Rumor has it that the camp/cemetery is now haunted, but we didn't encounter any ghostly beings while we were there.

We capped off our day with an evening campfire, where we roasted hot dogs for dinner and s'mores for dessert.  It was a beautiful evening, warm with clear skies.  I love autumn!
