400 Mile - Repurposed Treasures

Part of the fun when buying yard sale items is deciding what to do with them once you get your junk treasures home.

I wanted to do something with the 3 old canes I bought, other than prop them up in a corner of the room.  Remember when we repainted the bathroom a couple of week ago?  Well, I decided that the canes would be perfect hanging in there....

Then I took one of the picture frames I bought and painted and distressed it.  I put the Norman Rockwell picture back in the frame and that went into the bathroom as well...

The ugly napkin holder with the pears on it also got painted and distressed.  It now sits on the kitchen table and holds napkins and the remote controls.....

The Coke crate just got washed and now sits in the front room with books and magazines in it....

But the piece I love the most is the table I bought.  First I washed it up...

I removed the drawer which kept sticking and I sanded the entire table and the drawer until it didn't stick any longer....

Finally I applied a single coat of stain....

And placed it in the front room at the lake house.  I am in love with this table....

So that's what I ended up doing with my 400 mile yard sale treasures.  I can't wait until next year!

400 Mile Yard Sale Bargains

If you missed my original post about the fabulous 400 Mile Yard Sale, then go back and read about it here.   We covered 30 miles of it over a 2 day period and here are the treasures (well, treasures to us anyway) that we came home with.  We spent just about $ 50.00 on all of this.

I've been wanting a Coca Cola crate for a long time, but they are usually priced in Kentucky at around $ 45.00.  I haggled a bit and got mine for $ 5.00.  Chablis found a Pepsi crate in excellent condition and she paid $ 8.00 for hers.

I picked up the 3 canes for a total of $ 5.00.  I didn't know what I was going to do with them, but they were old and cool looking.  One has a design inlaid in it, one has a neat knobby end and the other is wrapped with metal.  I just liked the way they looked.

I got a small copy of a Norman Rockwell print for a quarter and I also picked up a nice shadow box for a quarter.  I've already ripped out the stupid cherry tree and painted the frame on that baby.  I'm planning on using it to display my horseshoe crab if it will fit.

Chablis picked up assorted bottles for less than a dollar total.

Chablis also picked up a nice wooden shelf for $ 2.00 dollars, a smaller shelf for 50 cents and that large crate for 8 bucks.  It has a nice cantaloupe sticker on the side that is in perfect condition.  I got that napkin holder for 50 cents even tho I didn't really like the pears painted on the front of it, but I figured I could paint over them.

My favorite thing though was the table.  I saw it at the swap meet and they wanted $ 30.00 for it.  I don't know why, but I just fell in love with it.  We walked away and went through the entire swap meet and as we were walking to our car an hour later, I told Chablis that I was going to walk back and see if the table was still sitting there.  It was - I took that as a sign.  I offered the woman $ 20.00 for it and she seemed happy to get rid of it.  I was thrilled!  We couldn't carry it to the car quickly enough.

Next post I'll show you what we've been doing with some of the stuff we bought.

Kentucky 400 Mile Yard Sale

How did I not know about something as cool as the Kentucky 400 Mile Yard Sale??  400 miles of yard sale bliss from Paducah to Mayville Kentucky.  Miles and miles of treasures and junk to paw through and haggle over.  I was in yard sale heaven!!

Chablis and I spent 2 days covering a 30 mile stretch of it along highway 68, and we barely scratched the surface.  There were yard sales everywhere.  In people's front yards, in empty lots, in store parking lots and in churches and community centers.  Everywhere we looked there were tables and tents, shelves and piles upon piles of stuff.  Lines of cars stretched down the highway, looking for parking anyplace they could find it.

Lots of people were selling homemade food items and some places even had huge barbeque pits going....  It sure smelled delicious.

One of my favorite stops was a sale at a gorgeous farm.  They had lots of good junk to pick through, but we were intrigued by their animals and out buildings.  The owner gave us permission to wander around the property and snap some photos.  Here I am in front of their smokehouse and it was filled with curing hams....

How pretty is this guy?  He was definitely the cock of the neighborhood.

The best finds of the 2 days were at this church - they had a giant swap meet set up and they had absolutely the best stuff there....

If you have a chance to partake of the 400 mile Yard Sale next year, be sure you do.  It was a lot of fun and we found a lot of good bargains.  But you'll have to wait until my next post to see what we all bought.
