Sanibel Island 2013 Day 4

On the fourth day of our vacation we decided to try Gulfside beach, which was a beach we'd never gone to before.

An eagle   (I stand corrected.  This is probably an osprey.  Thanks so much Diane for your good eye)  landed about 50 ft. away and was having a fish breakfast.  I slowly inched towards him, snapping pictures as I went.  I got about 25 ft. away when a pair of beach walkers charged through and scared him off.  Grrr.......  He left in a hurry, and took his breakfast with him....

We spent several hours strolling the beach area, looking for shells, but the only thing of interest that we found was this giant horseshoe crab.

Around lunchtime we took off and headed over to Pinocchio's for some ice cream (dirty sand dollar is my favorite) and then went back to our beach for awhile.  Again, we didn't find any good shells.  For dinner that night we went to The Fish House.  This is a newer restaurant on the island and Chablis declared it her new favorite place to eat.  She had shrimp and scallop alfredo that was delicious.  I had a seafood sampler that I didn't care for at all.  The scallops were just ok, the shrimp was way overcooked and I didn't care for the mahi at all.

After dinner we decided to head back out to Captiva and walk out to Red Fish Pass again.  I think this has become one of our favorite places to end the day.  This stretch of beach is just lovely and the sunset views are gorgeous.

On our brisk walk back to the parking lot after sunset, we saw this adorable little crab sitting on shore.  It was like he came out to say good night to us.

  1. What a perfect day...when I'm at the beach all I want to do is WALK and look for shells! We watched the movie Shell Seekers last night! I'm in the mountains and dreaming about seashells! You got some great photos of the bird...but I think it's an Osprey. You might google it and see what you think. You saw it up close and will be able to tell. Enjoy your day my friend! HUGS!!!

    1. I've never heard of Shell Seekers. I'll have to look that up. We spend hours walking up and down the beach. Its so relaxing. And you're probably right, I bet that IS an osprey. That makes more sense.

  2. Nice beach shots, especially the one of the footprint! Evening light is the best for photography isn't it?

    1. Chablis took the footprint shot - nice isn't it? I'm going to be doing a whole post on just her photos, which are gorgeous.

  3. Hi Kim, so good to see you! I can't believe I missed your trip. I wanted to take you to the drum circle while you were here. There's always next time I guess. You got some great photos and sure looks like you had a wonderful time. So glad to read that there was no red tide while you were here too, that stuff is brutal. Have a great Memorial Day weekend :)

  4. That horseshoe crab is definitely AMAZING!!! I'd sooo love to see one of those alive and in the wild!!! I think they're really cool critters! :o)

More gorgeous sunset photos... It's a good thing I live on the Mediterranean or I'd be green with envy right now! (but I'm still a light shade of green) :p
