Flashback Friday 2-8-13

It's time for Flashback Friday with Martha over at Seaside Simplicity.  It's quickly turning into a favorite weekly post.

My photos this week are of me when I went sky diving - this was one of the most awesome experiences of my life.  I had to take a day long training class in preparation and then they made us wait a week to do our first jump.  I think they did that because they figured you'd come back only if you really wanted to make the jump.   I really wanted to do it.  The guy friend who took the class with me did not go back.  :-)

That plane behind me is the plane they took us up in - it held the pilot, the instructor and 3 of us who wanted to jump.  Since I was the smallest person, they crammed me in the back of the plane.  It was so cramped in there.  I remember how cold and windy it was as we gained altitude and since I was the furthest back, I was the last to jump.  When I stood in the doorway and looked down, it was a long way down.  But when the instructor hit my leg and shouted "jump" I didn't think twice - out I went.  And for a few brief seconds I was a bird - arms and legs spread out and I could feel the wind rushing against my chest and then "poof" the parachute opened and I was floating on air.  I pulled the strings to maneuver around and just took in the view - you can see for miles from up there.

All too soon I hit the ground, surprisingly close to the landing circle.  Hit the ground, roll and grab the parachute.  Except the wind caught the chute and since I barely weighed 100 pounds, it dragged me down the landing strip on my back until I could flip over and get control of the parachute.  Wow - what an experience!

I've only done it once, but I will never forget it.  AWESOMENESS!!  Neither will my mom - she was a little pissed off at me for doing it.  Sorry mom!

Don't forget to go over to Seaside Simplicity and join in on the fun!

  1. AWESOME!

I'd love to try it at least once! My sisters both have (and in New Zealand no less!). My mom also wanted to kill my sister (the youngest, first one to do it) when she found out about the jump... after the fact of course! We didn't tell her beforehand 'cause we knew she'd be stressed out until she'd heard about my sis landing safely! :p

I had the chance to do it on my last trip to NZ, but it's so expensive! I decided to use that same money to do various other activities (scuba diving in the fjords, horseback riding, a kiwi walk on an isolated beach at night) and I don't regret it! But If I ever have the chance (and money) again I will definitely TAKE IT!

    Why haven't you repeated?

  2. Cris - I can totally see you doing this!

I didn't tell my mom about it until after the fact either. LOL. It's very expensive here too, plus the place to do it is quite far away. I really just wanted to do it once to see what it was like and for the experience. I also went parasailing once.

  3. You little daredevil! I can understand why your mom was pissed off, lol. I can imagine it must have been an amazing experience! I would have been one of those who didn't go back, I'm a big chicken. So glad you are enjoying Flashback Friday as much as I am. Have a great weekend :)

  4. Holy moley, Kim! I, too, am a big chicken ... one who doesn't get why anyone would want to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft. lol.
Still, I totally envy your attitude and wanting to seize LIFE with both hands outstretched! :)

  5. Wow, what nerve! I am not sure I will ever jump out of a perfectly good airplane either, lol, but I have to admit, there is a part of me that thinks it would be fun. :)

  8. I had planned to do this back in my mid 20s, but it was really expensive. We even went and watched a friend do it. He had his own shute, and went every chance he got. I no longer have a desire to jump from a plane. Great picture of you!
