Up a Tree

We made a quick geocaching run yesterday and only did 3 caches, but it felt good to get out of the house for an hour and indulge my inner monkey.  2 of the caches were hidden up in trees and as you know, that's my favorite kind.

Cache one.....

Cache 2 was placed much higher and Louie tried to talk me out of going for it.  Seriously??  I love climbing pine trees - the branches are often perfectly placed for climbing, like stairs to the top of the tree.

If you look closely, you can see my blue jacket in the upper half of the tree.  That's my backpack and red hat laying on the ground.  I didn't want anyone to think I fell out of the tree.  LOL!

It was pretty darn cold and windy up there.  The hardest part was getting my pen out of my jacket pocket and opening the cache while trying to hang onto the tree.    But it all worked out.  It was quick and fun!

  1. Girl you are crazy!! I can't believe you climbed that tree! I would be terrified. I don't like getting up and down on my step ladder! Lol.
What do you do with the cache? I'm not sure that I understand what this is all about. I know it's a big deal but I don't know what you are supposed to do. How do you know where to look for one? It always looks like you are having the time of your life and I love that you can do this solo or with your whole family.

    1. Hi Roxanne:

You have to join the geocaching.com website - its free for a basic membership. Once there, you can look up geocaches in your area and each geocache has it's own page that gives you information about the cache, like what size it is and gives you GPS co-ordinates where it's hidden, plus a description of it and maybe a hint.

You go look for it and when you find it, you sign the logsheet inside to prove you were there and then put it back how you found it so someone else can go look for it. Then you go home, go back to the cache page and officially log it in on the cache page.

It's easier to find them if you have a GPS or a smart phone of some sort, but it is possible to find them without a GPS as well.

If you're ever interested in doing it, give me a shout and I'll help you with it. It's lots of fun and it gets us outside, which I like.

  2. That would be awesome! Tree caches! Though, there don't seem to be many accessible trees around here. But cool nonetheless!

  3. You need to add a lineman's safety belt & boot hooks to your gear. Did you get sap all over you?

    1. Don't give me any ideas. LOL. Nope, no sap - probably cuz it's too cold.

    1. It really wasn't bad. I've actually been higher than that before. I usually scope them out to be safe tho - if it doesn't look good, I don't do it. And I apply the 3 limb rule - 3 limbs (arms & legs) must be attached to a branch or the truck while one limb is free. I like to be safe.

  8. You are much braver than me. I am definitely "allergic" to heights. Looks like you had a lot of fun.

  11. FUN!!! You sure made it up quite high! :o)

I love climbing trees too! Although lately I'm a bit more worried about getting back down than I used to be... Experience with severe sprains in ankle and knee have taught me the meaning of the word caution... (but I ignore most of the time so oh well!) :p

  12. Hmmmm... I never thought about climbing trees actually. You must be quite adventuresome!

Guess I'll have to decide if that should go on my goals list for 2013! ;)

    Happy climbing and geocaching!
