Homemade Dishwashing Detergent

I've been seeing a lot of homemade household cleaners on different blogs lately, but the one that caught my eye was the one for dishwashing detergent.

The brand I normally use is a powder and it begins with a "C".   I don't want to name names....

Anyway, the homemade version consists of 1 cup of Borax and 1 cup of baking soda.

Mix it together.  Use 1 teaspoon of the mixed powder per load of dishes.  That's it!

I am amazed at how much better this works for me.  My dishes are truly cleaner.  They are so clean that my 19 year old son even commented one day  "Why are the dishes coming out cleaner all of a sudden?"    Now that to me is amazing when a 19 year old male notices something like that.

I also have been using pure vinegar as a rinsing agent instead of "J-- D--."  Again, I don't want to name names.  The vinegar is HUGELY cheaper and works just as well.

Now, math is not my strong suit and I am not about to sit and give myself a migraine trying to figure out the cost differences between my former dishwashing detergent and my new concoction, but I know my new stuff is definitely cheaper.  But even better than that, it works better!

Just thought I'd pass this on!

  1. I'm seriously all about this!! I have the borax for my laundry soap and everyone has baking soda. When I run out of dishwasher soap it's as if someone died. I HATE doing dishes and so do the other six people I live with. We'll dirty every dish, stack them high and move on to paper or eating out. (Yes, we are that bad). I run my dishwasher 2-3 times a day and would run it ten if I had to! Thank you so much for sharing this as I have enough detergent for two more loads!!

  2. Ohmygosh I use the same products you do...not naming names, but yeah! I am going to buy some Borax, baking soda, and another gallon of vinegar. I use vinegar for many things, not just cooking, but cleaning as well. I love saving money! Thanks Kim!

  3. Okay I am going to try this. I have read recipes before with mixed reviews but if you say it is working better it is worth a shot since I have both things in my house and probably less toxic too.

  4. I love borax for palmetto bugs in Florida. Put a line around your window sills and the bugs stay away. Hope you're having a great week. xo

  5. Great idea! A plumber once showed me his trick of pouring about half a box of baking soda on your sink drain, then pouring vinegar on it. He says it cleans a drain right out without using harsh chemicals. And it's fun too because when you pour on the vinegar it all foams up bubbling.

  6. I'm totally into baking soda and vinegar for cleaning drains...the foaming combo is AWESOME! And harmless.
